City-Wide Trauma Awareness, Sensitivity and Healing Through Relationships
Section 4
4.1 Research/Evaluation This proposed research aims to map the journey of Cork City in its goal of becoming a city that is Trau- ma-sensitive. To date, no city in Ireland has a strategic plan to become trauma aware, sensitive, informed or responsive. Moreover, there is no existing research in an Irish context providing a roadmap and tool kit for a city to develop policies and training programmes to achieve the goal of being Trauma-sensitive. This research will develop the roadmap, the framework and will evaluate the process and progress.
To generate new knowledge in this field, a comprehensive 4-phase methodological process will be employed to design a bespoke framework of practice for Cork City that is unique and culturally sensitive. This research which will be conducted by MTU Cork, through its ambitious thinking and multifaceted approach, could be viewed as a pioneering study for cities and agencies who are envisioning delivering services that are Trau- ma-sensitive or trauma-informed.
The research design lends itself to independent academic outputs at each of the four phases. All phases of this research will be of considerable interest to researchers in the field and will contribute innovative knowledge within the area of trauma research. It is envisaged that research will provide a toolkit that other cities can follow in their design towards developing systems that are Trauma-sensitive This strategy is taking a system-wide approach to tackle the effects of trauma by designing a bespoke model/ framework to help: • help prevent trauma from occurring in the first place • promote protective factors for children • ensure key stakeholders understand the possible signs and symptoms that may be the result of toxic stress and intervene appropriately • help adults who are experiencing adversity
