Chapter 11 I Placemaking and Managing Development

Public Art

Underwater Archaeology

11.211 An important feature of Cork City’s cultural heritage is its Public Art. Public pieces of art contribute to the overall appearance of a city and improve the quality of life through the enhancement of the area. The Per Cent for Arts Scheme is a scheme that allows for the inclusion in the budgets for all capital construction projects of up to 1% as funding for an art project subject to conditions.

11.209 All development proposals which will impact on marine, riverine, intertidal and estuarine environments, and areas of former reclaimed land, shall be subject to appropriate archaeological assessment by suitably qualified underwater archaeologists. Preservation of Archaeology within Open Space in Developments 11.210 In development proposals where archaeology is to be retained in-situ the archaeology will be protected, safeguarded and where suitable interpreted in an accessible manner. Where the archaeology is to remain in an open space, then this will be in addition to the overall open space provisions.
