Cork Access Network Cork Access Network Webinar took place on the 8th of October 2021 entitled ‘ New Department, New Opportunities’ as part of an ongoing series of CAN events, designed to bring partners together as a network to tackle education disadvantage in Cork City and region. The event in October featured the Secretary General of the Department of Further & Higher Education, Research, Innovation & Science, Mr. Jim Breslin as our guest of honour. As in previous events, our ‘Soap Box’ inputs provided great grounding for the discussions and the keynote presentation by Dr. Drew Koch from Gardner Institution, North Carolina, USA, spoke about unrepresented groupings in the education system in the United States. The panel on the day included the president of MTU, Maggie Cusack and the Vice President for learning and teaching in UCC, Professor Paul McSweeney, Chief Executive of CETB Denis Leamy and in particular featuring Secretary General Jim Breslin responded to the observations of Drew Koch. To close out the morning, there was an announcement of a new partnership offered by Workvivo as industry partners now willing to provide their platform as a way of improving communications among network members. There was a high level of engagement from different groups and organisations throughout the morning with more than sixty-five online on the day.
UNESCO UIL Global Conference of Learning Cities At the 5 th UNESCO UIL Global Conference of Learning Cities in Yonseu, Korea, held online, Lord Mayor Cllr. Colm Kelleher and Chief Executive Ann Doherty made a joint keynote presentation focused on learning that emerged from the work Cork City Council achieved over the past two years. This ranged from co-hosting a cluster of cities for health and wellbeing and learnings from the experience to responding to the needs of citizens ’ health and wellbeing during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The community response forum was also presented by Chief Executive Ann Doherty. One of the key takeaway points from the presentation was that learning, and wellbeing are interchangeable and that we need to understand in a much more fundamental way the contribution that being involved in learni ng in a positive way can have on people’s wellbeing.
