Cork City Council Annual Report 2021

Rebel Streets Cork Community Artlink and the Traveller Visibility Group (TVG) partnered to create an impactful large-scale mural on the facade of the TVG Headquarters in Cork City. This project provided an opportunity for an intergenerational community to express their perspectives on life in the travelling community through a combination of symbols, words, and imagery. Traditionally, traveller groups have been depicted with images such as horses, barrel top carts, and boxing. Young travellers worked with Cork Community Artlink and older members of their community in Cork to depict their history through contemporary representations alongside the traditional cultural imagery. The resulting artwork reflects their identity, dreams, and reality. The mural was developed and designed through consultation sessions with TVG Community Development Workers, young people and users of the building including parents of children attending the creche. On 12 th June 2021, young people experimented with graffiti and street art techniques facilitated by Cork Community Art Link to coincide with Cruinniú na nÓg. The mural was complete at the end of June 2021. On the back of the success of the project and the positive response by viewers, Cork Community Art Link and Cork Traveller Visibility Group developed an online event aimed to facilitate Traveller Culture Awareness for Cork's Art Sector.

Tools of the Trade A cross-curricular, multidisciplinary collaborative art project in 2021, the Tools of the Trade programme for St Mary's on the Hill National School, Cork, partnered with Crawford Art Gallery, the National Maritime College of Ireland and Passage West Maritime Museum.

Through a hybrid delivery of workshops and tours, Tools of the Trade artists and coordinators Susan Walsh and Leah Murphy engaged students in the maritime history and culture of their city. The students created artistic works in response which included driftwood sculptures inspired by boating and two unique series of paintings and prints. The project culminated in an exhibition displayed at the Nano Nagle Centre to coincide with Cruinniú na nÓg 2021 on 12 th June . Drop-in workshops were also facilitated so that young participants could create their own driftwood sculptures.
