Environmental Awareness and Education Cork City Council’s Environmental Awareness section del ivers a range of activities each year around the themes of environmental improvement, waste prevention and greener living.
Green Schools 15 Cork City schools were awarded Green Flags in 2021.
Pride in our Community The annual “Pride in our Community” awards are organised by Cork County Federation of Muintir na Tíre in conjunction with Cork County Council and Cork City Council. 2021 was the first year that the competition was open to entries from Cork City. The Pride of Cork City Award was won by Ballincollig Tidy Towns for their pollinator project which included the planting of pollinator plants throughout Ballincollig. ReUse Month Programme Cork City Council, in conjunction with Cork Environmental Forum, ran a programme of events called T( h )read Lightly to celebrate Reuse Month. The week-long Programme included an exhibition of upcycled fashion that was created and curated by fashion students from St. Johns College Central College. The exhibition featured fashion from local charity and vintage shops.
The programme also included daily lunchtime talks and workshops on reuse, repair and upcycling.
Lifetime Lab The Lifetime Lab in the Old Cork Waterworks is Cork’s primary science centre. It engages primary school children with science and maths (STEM subjects). Lifetime Lab offers a range of SESE curriculum linked, hands on, Discover Primary Science and Maths accredited workshops and school outreach from September to June. Science with Una A series of sixteen short science at home activities were streamed during lockdown in 2021 and were extremely successful.
Online Workshops Lifetime Lab moved all of its school workshops online in 2021 in response to the Covid pandemic.
