Sports & Amenity
Sports & Amenity Fund The Sports & Amenity Fund is for the purchase of equipment that community groups and sports and local organisations in Cork city can benefit from and will meet their needs in relation to outdoor active recreation. The 2021 budget was €230,000, to be split over the five Electoral Areas. Since this was the first year of the funding, extensive consultation was carried out to explore how best to fulfil some of the needs of the community and groups. The overwhelming feedback was that amenities could be increased in public parks, which have been such a valuable outlet for the public especially during COVID-19 restrictions. A survey of the existing amenities throughout the city was undertaken and, in consultation with the Parks section, seven sites were identified for the installation of six callisthenics (street workout) gyms and a Multi- Use Games Area (MUGA). The location for the latter, in Donkey’s Field, Grange, will be available for installation in late 2022. After a public procurement process, Kompan Ireland Ltd were engaged to install the outdoor gyms at: Clogheenmilcon, Blarney; John O’Callaghan Park, Glanmire; Popham’s Park, Farranree; Gerry O’Sullivan Park, Churchfield; Lough Mahon Amenity Walkwa y; and at Murphy’s Farm, Bishopstown. The callisthenics gyms will have a range of exercise units that are suitable for a wide range of ages and abilities. Installation will be complete in April 2022.
