Sports Capital Grant Scheme 2021 Cork City Council, through its Sports Capital Grant Scheme, seeks to assist local voluntary sporting organisations and clubs in developing and enhancing sports and physical recreation throughout the City through the provision of grants for of non- personal sports equipment. €420 ,000 was allocated to 95 clubs and organisations across the city in 2021.
Sports Development Officer Cork City Council employs a Sports Development Officer (SDO) with support from Cork Education Training Board. Our SDO works to increase physical activity opportunities across the city and works with a specific remit of ‘Youth at Risk’ age 10 -24. Our Sports Development Officer delivered a number of successful initiatives in 2021 with some of the highlights detailed below.
Sports On the Green In response to Covid-19 restrictions our Sports Development Officer designed a programme called Sports on the Green. This initiative focused on removing key barriers to physical activity participation such as time, cost, and a lack of transport. Sessions took place on the green area of local housing estates and offered a free three-day summer camp style programme to young people across the city. Sessions were delivered by experienced and professional coaches from Munster Rugby, FAI, Athletics Ireland, and Cricket Ireland and introduced young people to a verity of sports on their doorstep. In July and August our Sports Development Officer ran a six-week programme of Sports on the Green which took place in 42 locations across the city spanning all electoral wards and Rapid Areas. With over 120 individual sessions this programme was hugely successful and is something we hope to replicate in 2022. Our Sports on the Green programme was awarded a Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Award under the Health and Wellbeing Category, something which highlights its success.
