Cork City Council Annual Report 2021

[Leading Cork to take its place as a World Class City] __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Orienteering In 2021 our Sports Development Officer also worked closely with Bishopstown Orienteering Club to deliver 16 full days of Orienteering in Council Parks across the city. Sessions were offered out to local schools, youth and community groups with the cost covered by Cork City Council. This programme was hugely successful with over 1,055 young people taking part. Virtual Marathon Youth Challenge The Sports Development Officer worked with a number of internal and external stakeholders on a virtual marathon challenge for young people across the city. Cork Sports Partnership were a lead partner alongside Cork City Council and ran a number of events in the lead up such as online talks from Rob Heffernan, Olympian Race Walker. Participation exceeded 3,000 young people from a mixture of individuals, families, schools, youth, and community groups. We are hoping that many of these people will progress to participating in a real-life event in 2022. Soccer Development Officer Cork City Council co-funds the post of a dedicated Soccer Development Officer for Cork City with the Football Association of Ireland. Our Soccer Development Officer works to raise awareness and participation in soccer across a number of key target groups in the city. They work with a range of clubs, schools, youth and community groups as well as assisting on Emerging Talent programmes. Some of their key programmes from 2021 are detailed below. Women’s Social Soccer Our Soccer Development Officer is working with Cork Sports Partnership to deliver a free social soccer programme to women in Cork City. Sessions are focused on being active in a fun and enjoyable atmosphere and do not have a competitive element. We have had unprecedented demand for this programme, and it is something our Soccer Development Officer is continuing to look at new ways to expand.
