Enhancing Cork City’s Outdoor Dining Offering

Cork City’s outdoor d ining facilities were a major attraction for domestic visitors during 2021, and throughout the year Cork City Council secured funding from Fáilte Ireland to further enhance the city’s outdoor dining offering. A new outdoor dining grant scheme was introduced by Fáilte Ireland and operated through the tourism section. The scheme provided small grants of up to €4 ,000 to support the purchase of outdoor furniture, windbreakers, and heaters and enhance the outdoor hospitality capacity in Cork City. In total, Cork City Council awarded grants totalling over €615,000 to 207 hospitality businesses across Cork City including cafes, restaurants, hotels and pubs. In addition, Cork City Council secured over €1.3 million in grant aid from Fáilte Ireland to support the installation of outdoor dining infrastructure on 5 city centre streets. While enhancing the existing scheme on Princes St, the funding supported the development of schemes on Union Quay, Caroline St. and Beasley St. – all 3 were unveiled as new bespoke outdoor dining destinations in December, with a further scheme planned for Pembroke St in early 2022. Outdoor dining will be a permanent feature of Cork’s tourism and hospitality offering post-COVID, and structures like these allow visitors to access outdoor dining options for longer periods of the year, helping businesses towards sustainable recovery and generating a buzz and excitement for visitors all year round.
