Cork City Council Annual Report 2021

[Leading Cork to take its place as a World Class City] __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Playful Culture Trail The months of July and August saw the visitor attractions in Cork City come together with Cork City Council’s Tourism section to promote Cork’s Playful Culture Trail. Working in conjunction with other partners such as Cork Playful Paradigm the trail sought to encourage children and families to discover what was on offer in the City’s museums, galleries and attractions with a trail of 30 playful things to do in Cork City. The trail was promoted through a colourful and child friendly map and goodie bag, which was distributed from attractions and hotels in the city. Each attraction had an activity pack for kids with challenges to complete during their visit. And children kept a beady eye out for ‘Blaithín’ the lizard – the play trail mascot who played hide and seek in lots of attractions. The trail generated substantial media coverage, providing a ready-made ‘package’ activity for family visits to Cork City.

Developing New Tourism Products and Infrastructure During 2021 work continued on the development of a new pedestrian wayfinding system for Cork City, which should be rolled out in 2022. In addition, funding of €670 ,000 was secured from Fáilte Ireland’s Urban Animation scheme which will enable the development of a trail of five sculptural public art works in a variety of contemporary media (3d sculpture, lighting, 2d wall-based, digital) in Cork City Centre. The trail will be thematically linked by Cork City’s heritage, adding interest and intrigue for visitors and local people.

Cork City Council continues to support and resource the work of Visit Cork in promoting Cork as a leisure and business tourism destination – nationally and internationally.
