The Skehard Road Realignment and Renewal Phase 3 Project consists of realignment and improvement works to the Skehard Road for approximately 610m between the Skehard Road/Church Road and the Skehard Road/Mahon Point Road/Blackrock Avenue junctions. Works also included improvements to the junction of Skehard Road/Bessboro Road and accesses to Skehard Lawn and Oakdene and ties in with work carried out in previous phases west of the junction with Church Road and with work at the CSO junction at the eastern extent of the scheme.

Overall, works included the provision of new footways, cycleways, bus lanes, traffic lanes and associated signage, traffic signals, works for services and other ancillary works.

Description of Project Benefits

Key benefits of the scheme include: -

• Creation of an environment to encourage modal shift from cars to cycling and public transport. • Provision of dedicated combined cycle and bus lanes to provide continuity with earlier phases, enhancing connectivity for cyclists and expanding the overall cycle network. • Installation of bus stops with new bus shelters. • Provision of wider and consistent footways for pedestrian comfort. • Reconfiguration of junctions and traffic signals to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists. • Installation of energy efficient LED public lighting. • Moving of overhead electrical cables to underground ducting. • Repaving of the carriageway and the provision of road markings and signage.

The works commenced in late 2020 and following for a site closure for Covid-19 lockdowns, were substantially completed in December 2021.
