Sinead McCoole: The Eyes & Ears - Women’s Role in the Campaign of Independence Remembering the revolutionary women of Cork who played such a significant part in the events of 100 years ago, this year’s lecture was given by Sinead McCoole. Focusing on Cork City and County, Sinead explored women’s involvement in active resistance, in particular in espionage during the Campaign for Independence. This riveting lecture explored the activities of four of the less well-known revolutionary women, Kathleen Keynes McDonnell, Margaret Goulding (Buckley), Miss Browne and Anna Mulqueen. This research is based on new source material recently available through the Military Archives. The Man in the Uniform As part of its 2021 Centenary Commemorations programme, Cork City Council broadcasted a short film, “The Man in the Uniform” on its YouTube channel. The film, produced by Maurice Dineen of Club Ceoil, Ballyphehane, is set in Cork City on the precipice of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1921 and centres on James O’Donoghue, a sergeant in the Royal Irish Constabulary (R.I. C.), born and raised in Kerry, now living on Tower Street in Cork City. James tells us his story of love, loss, challenges, and pride. He shows us there are two sides to every war, and many struggles on either side. Through the film we discover that he supports neither the rebels or the English, he is first and foremost an Irishman, with a home, a wife and a family.
