Lord Mayor’s Foreword
As Lord Mayor, I’m delighted to provide a foreword to Cork City Council’s Irish Language Plan. As first citizen, it is a source of great personal pride that the first thing I do at all public engagements is to address the disparate audiences in the Irish language.
Cork is, above all else, a city of interconnected communities and nowhere is that more relevant than in the use and visibility of the Irish language in the city.
The Irish language community is not simply a gathering of those proficient in the language. It is made up of those who are fluent, have conversational Irish, and those interested but lacking in the confidence to use what Irish they have or would like to have openly and regularly. Nowhere is the phrase “Ní neart go cur le chéile” more relevant than in the support and prominence of the Irish language in the everyday life of the city. This plan is ambitious, committed and measurable. It underpins the commitment of elected members and the executive of the council to support and deliver specific actions. The plan encourages community engagement through events and activities promoting the visibility and use of the language. It encourages networking and cooperation across statutory bodies, businesses and the community sector. In essence, this plan will assist in encouraging all the people of Cork city to engage with the language in new and enjoyable ways.
