Climate change is affecting everything in our city. The Lifelong Learning Festival gives us the chance to learn what the causes are, and what are some of the things we can do. Let’s think about two examples: • Poorly insulated homes are the biggest source of greenhouse gases in Cork. Learning how our homes can be more comfortable and use less energy increases understanding, and encourages people to take the first step. • Making small changes that benefit the climate can make an enormous impact on our city. Walking, cycling, or using public transport for more of our short journeys improves our physical and mental health. City centres that have less congestion soon find people coming in and staying, boosting business, and making city centres better places to live. • Wasted food is a major problem in Ireland and a big expense to households. Learning skills around using recipes, well thought out shopping lists, and cooking tips, make a big difference to this problem. Over time research has shown that reducing our food waste is one of the biggest impacts people can have on the climate, and it saves money too. The Lifelong Learning Festival gives you the opportunity to learn about all these things and more. It will also give you ideas about what you can join in with, or where you can find help to act. Climate change affects everyone, man or woman, young or old, wherever you are from. We are all in this together. The festival is an opportunity to learn together and from each other. It will help to create the friendships and connections across the city that will make us all better able to act. Our elected representatives have set a vision for the future where Cork City is transforming into a climate neutral and resilient city that is rapidly becoming more fair, healthier, more economically vibrant and a more sustainable place to live, work and do business. Learning together helps us achieve that vision. There’s a reason that Cork calls itself the ‘Real Capital’ – we’re ferociously proud and passionate about our city. And when faced with challenges, we stand together and take action. Nowhere is this seen more than in how our communities have risen to challenges over the last number of years. We’re now facing an even greater challenge of responding to our changing climate. To thrive as a city into the future, we need to act now, think long term, and we need to make sure everyone is resilient, able to cope with and bounce back from disasters, like floods or extreme weather. It will take communities working together across our city to find creative solutions to our shared challenge. This year’s Lifelong Learning Festival is about climate. No one person or organisation has all the answers to climate change. Many people find the issue, and the language used to describe it, confusing. Without understanding climate change it is less likely that we will act. This is one of the reasons why learning from each other is so important. Inside this brochure, you will find events where you can learn how people are already tackling climate change, for example by looking after our environment and making the city greener. "It is the responsibility of everyone, at every level, to act on climate" Ann Doherty, CE Cork City Council
