Shortlist Award Old Cork Waterworks Experience project team delivered the 2022 Cork Carnival of Science -a free two-day event that was the largest outdoor STEM engagement event in Ireland and attracted an audience of 25,000 people approx. Cork Carnival of Science was designed to offer multi- generational engagement opportunities with the sciences in a non-formal and easily accessible environment, featuring over 200 personnel, two circus big tops, 30 marquees and gazebos, 24 pop up activities, food stalls and live music.

Award Winner Food Fund, Terence McSwiney Community College & Foróige

Knocknaheeny are group of 5 transition year students who established a social enterprise where they set out to manage the waste food from school meals in a more sustainable way. They decided to set up a system to donate all leftover meals, sandwiches and fruit to Penny Dinners and had by Autumn 2022 donated 9,000 meals, 5,000 pieces of fruit and 4,500 sandwiches to the food charity. They have been supported in the development of an App by APPLE staff so they can monitor, manage and market the Food Fund project, enabling other schools nationally to mirror their effort.

Shortlist Award ‘Welcome to Ireland’ programme at ACE, UCC The team designed and delivered a short course aimed at providing a positive University experience for displaced students from the Ukraine in consultation with a Ukrainian academic. The students were able to engage with and communicate with peers, as well as receive answers to their most pressing questions. The course contained practical information, and the students felt the support and empathy of their new Irish friends at UCC.

Shortlist Award Ms Carolyn Miller’s voluntary contribution to the Togher Learning Neighbourhood builds on her involvement in Summer Camps, Parents’ Associations, Tidy Towns and in her latest project, the Togher Market. All have had many positive spin offs, bringing people together and building inclusion for all in the Togher community.

The Cork Celebrates Lifelong Learning Awards has been warmly received by the people of Cork. The awards have been instrumental in highlighting the impact of a variety of individuals and organisations whose commitment to lifelong learning is powerful in so many ways. Although there is only one winner in each category, the awards shine a positive light on the work of all nominees. These awards are a celebration of how lifelong learning enables people to change their lives and how learning is a way to improve life, work and community.
