Sanctuary Runners
Over 450 Sanctuary Runners and Students Unite for Inaugural Analog Devices NextGen Solidarity 10k More than 450 runners will take to the streets of Cork this week in a powerful display of community, inclusion, and shared humanity as part of the Analog Devices Cork City Marathon. The event marks the first ever Analog Devices NextGen Solidarity 10k, bringing together over 200 Sanctuary Runners from Ireland’s Direct Provision system and 250 transition year students from schools across the region. The initiative highlights the growing partnership between the Sanctuary Runners - a movement using running to foster solidarity between Irish residents and people seeking international protection - and the next generation of young people eager to build a more welcoming society. Over recent months, participating transition year students have taken part in a unique programme combining 10k race training with social learning . Students explored the realities of the Direct Provision system, met Sanctuary Runners, and learned how sport can break down barriers and create meaningful human connections.
“ This is solidarity in action ,” said representatives from the Sanctuary Runners. “ When young people run shoulder to shoulder with those living in Direct Provision, they’re not just completing a race - they’re helping reshape the story of who belongs in Ireland. Everyone belongs. ” Cork City Council and Analog Devices Cork City Marathon, launched the NextGen Solidarity 10k to deepen community engagement and empower young people to lead with empathy, awareness, and courage. The race is incredibly proud to support an event that brings people together in such a positive and human way. The students are learning that solidarity isn’t abstract - it’s something you do. The Sanctuary Runners will once again be one of the largest and most diverse groups on the course, representing dozens of nationalities and communities. Their presence underscores the marathon’s role as a celebration of unity, resilience, and the power of shared movement.
