Conservation/ Built Heritage
The Historic Structures Fund is administered by the local authority with funding provided by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. Following announcement of the HSF in late 2019, four applications were received by the Conservation Office and three were submitted to the Department for consideration for funding. Two projects were awarded a total of €55,000 - €40,000 for roof and dormer window renewal at the former Gárda Barracks, Elizabeth Fort and €15,000 for the repair of decaying stone window surrounds and the reinstatement of a sash window at the MUH former Mansion House. These works were satisfactorily completed in late-2020 despite the difficult conditions caused by the pandemic for the building industry. The HSF for 2021 has been announced with a closing date of the end of this month. Details are on the City Council website The Architectural Conservation Area (ACA) Grants Scheme is operated by Cork City Council from its own funds to support repair works to buildings in the city's ACAs. A total of €65,000 was set aside by the Council for the scheme in 2020. Thirteen applications were received by the end of June deadline and all were offered funding, to a total of €84 ,835.40. It was expected, due to the disruption caused by the pandemic, that it was unlikely all of the successful projects would proceed, and that it was preferable to over-allocate rather than risk under-spending. In the event, eleven projects were compl eted by the end of the year, receiving a total of €70,825.40 in grant aid. The scope of the projects supported by the ACA scheme is generally very broad - in 2020 projects included the Blarney Church of the Resurrection Conservation strategy report, window repairs to Blackrock House (the former Ursuline Convent), through to mosaic tile floor repairs in the hall of a house in Ballintemple.
