Carpenters Hall was bought in the 1930s by the A.S.W Cork 1st and 2nd amalgamated society of woodworker. Some the unions which rented rooms in Carpenters Hall were • National union of Railway Men • Electrical Trade Union • Amalgamated Engineers Union
• Plumbers Union • Masons Society • District Office
• National Federation of Building Trades Operatives. • Amalgamated Transport and General Workers Union. • Plasterers’ union.
The building was run by a group of trustees from the A.S.W. Cork. When the unions eventually pulled out of the building leaving the masons as the only tenants, the Masons Society created a historical group to educate the general public on the importance of the building in the craft societies history. There were many historical items left behind such as the banners of the Masons Society 1843 and the Plasterer’s Society 1957, a chair belonging to the Carpenters Society 1877 made from timber left over from the confessional boxes in St Peter and Paul’s Church. A talk on the Masons language and history will be given at 11am. No booking required.
