Appendix 6 High Level Goal 6: Leading on Sustainability and Climate Action
Submission source Summary of Issue Raised relevant to this High-Level Goal 6.2.2 Planning Cork City A Vision
This document outlines a sustainable growth plan for the city under the Cork City Development Plan 2022-2028, a plan which provides a new planning framework for delivering sustainable growth based on Cork City’s environmental as well as human and economic assets. It addresses land management, tackling climate action and protecting the natural and built heritage in a longer-term vision for land use planning. It plans for increased recourse to more sustainable brownfield development, assisting in turn city centre regeneration and sustainable expansion of development in 11 areas targeted under this vision for the enlarged Cork City. In this context the LECP presents an opportunity to identify best sustainability practice in these new growth areas such as the Docklands and those that will have Framework plans developed The Cork Environmental Forum requests adding a reference to nature to the LECP Vision as follows: Add after (in bold) “with placemaking, communities, nature, and quality of life at its heart.” It further: • Calls for the results of the Blue and Green Infrastructure Study as well as mapping tools to assess the natural assets that exit in Cork. • Engage communities in these projects to gather further data through existing networks and groups (CEF, Nature Forum, etc) • Cork City could take on some actions in the proposed Nature Restoration Law • Maximise the potential for solar power on roof tops via the Climate Action Fund • Sensitive management of natural assets such as the river, harbour, and green spaces • Increasing budgets for NGOs • More cross collaboration between organisations and the idea of a “Citizens Assembly” on topics under key consideration.
