Appendix 6 High Level Goal 6: Leading on Sustainability and Climate Action

Submission source Summary of Issue Raised relevant to this High-Level Goal 6.2.4 Cork Healthy Cities Steering Group “Green Cities” submission

Green Spaces for Health is a city-wide community led initiative of Cork Healthy Cities which aligns with the Cork Healthy Cities Action Plan Phase VII 2020-2030. This submission recommends the following changes to the High-Level Goals (see text in bold for suggested additions) HLG1 A City valuing health and wellbeing and biodiversity. HLG4 A city driving sustainable economic and enterprise development. HLG5 A city of safe, accessible, green, and resilient neighbourhoods and communities This submission makes the following recommendations in relation to Objectives under this High-Level Goal (proposed changes are in bold text): 6.1 Ensure our city, communities and green infrastructure are resilient and adaptive to a changing climate. 6.5 Establish environmentally friendly systems that encourage and support biodiversity. Add thereafter the following text (it isn’t specified whether this should add to 6.5 or constitute new and separate objectives or actions: Protect our waterways as a valuable resource to local communities. Carry out an audit of green spaces in Cork city with a view to developing underutilised green spaces and encouraging and supporting local communities to green their neighbourhood, plant trees and grow food locally Increase urban green space, which is inherently good for the environment through carbon sequestration and is good for health. Support community projects by identifying and allocating green spaces for new community growing projects Green and open spaces facilitate contact with nature, as well as contact with community. Green and open spaces in the city centre should embrace increased physical activity, social connectivity and improved mental wellbeing as desired outcomes.
