Appendix 4 High Level Goal 4 – Economic Enterprise and Development
Submission source Summary of Issue Raised relevant to this High-Level Goal 4.2.1 Cork City Public Partnership Network (CCPPN)
The CCPPN submission was developed based on focus groups, one-to-one discussions, submissions and in-person consultation with member groups at its plenary in May 2023. Given the very extensive list of groups consulted by the CCPPN – which includes some groups who submitted separately to the LECP and are dealt with below – is provided in the Annex to this section. The CCPN submission aims to make “practical, achievable steps towards a more inclusive and sustainable Cork City.” This submission is structured according to the 6 High Level Goals and recommendations relevant to High Level Goal 4 – Driving Economic and Enterprise Development - (summarised as far as possible but with some non-strategic not referred to for efficiency reasons) are as follows: • The need for a more sustainable economy based on circular economy principles and strengthening areas such as renewable energy, repair and recycling and community banking. • The need for a more inclusive economy with fair working conditions • Affordable housing with a good range and mix of options – particularly one- and two-bedroom apartments suitable for younger and older people. More specifically: • Radical investment in developing secure affordable homes by Cork City council. • Establish a Cork City Council Equality and Inclusion Charter that businesses can voluntarily sign up to setting out equality and inclusion goals that businesses could commit to achieving. • Improve employment opportunities for marginalised communities. • Legislation to protect workers’ rights particularly in sectors with precarious employment conditions. • Promote small business and artists by offering more grants, support services and tailored loans. • Create a city-wide circular economy strategy to promote recycling and waste reduction. • The Council should oppose the selling of estates or multiple homes to institutional investors and should acknowledge that homes are for individuals and families to live in and not a source of profit.
