5.2.15 Traveller Interagency group

This submission promotes embedding Traveller community friendly infrastructure and signage into communities including facilities for horses, sporting facilities specific to the Traveller community (bowling, handball facilities) and improved facilities in Traveller community accommodation. This submission welcomes the planned investment in the upgrade scheme for Douglas Street and Mary Street as much needed to counter anti-social behaviour in the area and enhance its reputation and draw in people to the area. It calls on the LECP to address ongoing problems in Douglas Street including limited accessibility, speeding cars and illegal parking. This submission expresses concern about a “two-tiered” society in Cork between the North and South, with the North being neglected and differences in green spaces, the quality of walking spaces and housing development favouring the Southside. The submission suggests seeking grants from government or Europe to target older historic areas like Blackpool and develop vacant space around the Neptune stadium. It supports the idea of a regional park facility in the Northwest of the city overlooking the city and says that the Hewitt distillery building in Blackpool should be the focal point around which that area is vitalised
