Chief Executive Foreword
Tihe Irish language is central to our sense of identity, of community, of collaboration and economic development. Increasingly it is a key component of the work of local and central government.
the city signals our commitment to encourage those with all levels of fluency to practice their Irish in a non-judgemental and fun way across all aspects of city life. This implementation plan is a testament to our commitment to develop the language and to set measurable targets for improvement over the lifetime of this plan.
Cork City Council is committed to promoting and complying with our
responsibility to deliver services through Irish. Cork City Council is actively engaged in the implementation of its obligations under the Official Languages Acts of 2003 and 2021. The Council values its relationship with the office of the language commissioner. Concurrently, Cork City Council is raising the visibility of the Irish language in activities of the council through the communities it serves, including our new communities who have shown a strong interest in learning the Irish language and culture. Through its Grúpa Forbartha Gaeilge, a committee of Council made up of elected members from across the political spectrum, Cork City Council has funded Irish language initiatives. These include adult outreach music classes, creative writing in Irish, Ciorcail Comhrá and Irish language events across the city. Furthermore, the designation of St. Patrick’s Eve, March 16th as Lá na Gaeilge across
I ndiadh a chéile a thógtar na caisleáin.
Cork City Council is reaching out in this plan to other public sector bodies, the business community and the community sector to collaboratively raise the access to and visibility of Irish language services across the city. There is growing public demand and expectation on services to deliver on the key aspiration to make Cork a bilingual city. Táim ag tnúth le cur i bhfeidhm agus athbhreithniú an phlean seo thar na ceithre bliana atá romhainn, agus táim tiomanta dóibh.
