As a prelude to its proposals this submission cites survey evidence showing racist attitudes towards members of the Traveller community. Key recommendations of the Traveller Visibility Group are as follows: • The city council must counter racism in all public services ranging from accommodation services to health and education. • The city council must provide safe spaces for all identities, cultures, and ethnicities. • The city council should provide “Traveller community inclusive” facilities including signage, green areas, footpaths, and street lighting to ensure connectivity and visibility for the Traveller community. • A Local authority scheme should be put in pace to focus on early school leavers and on adult education participants to get skilled for operative roles in Cork City Council that would encourage more interaction between the settled and Traveller community. • Horse ownership should be facilitated by the Council through the provision of grazing facilities and through the management of a community horse project developed as a social enterprise. • Provision should be made for Traveller community activities and culture including equine therapy opportunities and a safe controlled space for sulky racing, hand ball alleys, road bowling and boxing. • A Traveller community sports and culture centre could be developed. • Traveller community culture and heritage could be included in tendering for public art and signage, including the proposed renaming of the Grange/Southlink bridge. • The Anti-Trespass Act should be reviewed and amended to support the Traveller community way of life. Key recommendations of the Traveller Interagency Group are as follows: • To maintain a continued focus around anti-racist activity • To maintain cross agency support for Traveller community Education initiatives, career guidance and mentorship • To develop a model of employment for Traveller community members where public sector organisations position themselves as key promoters of this goal. • To develop best practice in Cork City to underpin these initiatives. • To promote shared recreation and sport spaces • To promote Traveller community cultural awareness and awareness training • To collect data on the Traveller community population in Cork City and rate of screening programme take up and access to primary care
