• Cork’s potential to grow from a social and cultural perspective will increase its economic and investment attractiveness. To that end the following are recommended in this submission: • More visible police presence to enhance the city’s safety and reputation. • Making the city more accessible to disadvantaged groups, including: • Improved placemaking with more street furniture, age friendly parking spaces, removal of barriers to use of outdoor spaces and age friendly toilet, green and lighting facilities. • Make shops, heavy doors and (through better signposting) streets more accessible to those with mobility challenges. • The provision of better public transport facilities including bus shelters, community bus services, traffic calming measures and improving walkability in the city. • Accelerate the timeline of Cork Light Rail The submission notes the Cork Airport Strategy’s commitment to establishing multi-frequency hub connections with European flag carriers, reestablishing UK regional connectivity, delivering a transatlantic long-haul route and maintaining strong marketing links with Tourism Ireland and Pure Cork. It notes the Cork Metropolitan Area Strategic Plan (MASP) Policy objective 14 which seeks to support sustainable development and investment and facilities under the Cork Airport Masterplans and to support updates to the Cork Airport Special Local Area Plan and, also, the sustainable development of enhanced public transport connectivity to the airport through the provision of bus priority lanes on the N27 and an improvement in the alignment of the R600 south of the airport. The submission notes the emphasis in the National Planning Framework’s on international connectivity through its Regional Policy objective 150 and National Strategic Outcome 6 as well as Cork Airport’s key position in the core strategy of the Cork City Development Plan 2022-2028 to “be supported …as an international gateway for the city, wider Metropolitan area and Southern Region”. Noting these policy imperatives at national, regional, city and local area level, the submission requests that High Level Goal objective 4.1 be revised to state as follows 4.1 Invest in and develop Cork City’s communications, transport, and enterprise infrastructure to support economic growth, in particular the continued sustainable development of Cork Airport as an international gateway, key employment generator and economic driver for the city and region.”
