Issues: Access to / awareness of health services and wellness amenities, rats, depression & suicide, lack of routine and activity, overcrowding of facilities, Weil’s disease, high walls on site contribute to poor mental health, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, cancer, sleeping on floor Recommendations: Provide facility for horses to help with mental health, install a defibrillator on the park and provide tailored (to specific learning needs) training for use. Provide information on Slí na Sláinte 7km walk. Look at potential for outdoor gym. Provide a handball wall, bowls, a walkway around the site, supports/ a gym, have a talking support for Mental Health issues. (Social Interaction): Issues: Discrimination and lack of progress in securing rights for members of the Traveller community, feeling isolated from the settled community, struggles to integrate with the larger community, feuds within the community and on social media (Facebook), calls for building a network of support for the community. (Identity and belonging): Issues: Importance of preserving traveller community culture, expectation for boys to stay on the site and marry within the community, cultural activities like road bowling and handball, Community walled off vs. Apple – do not feel part of any neighbourhood, mental Health issues on site. Recommendations: meetings and communications with residents, woodwork a men’s shed. (Feeling safe): Issues: Concerns about violence and murder on the site, not feeling safe in some parts of Knocknaheeny, need for a clean and safe environment, health concerns related to living in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions. (rats & sewers), lack of awareness of potential health risks, dirty youth centre (dung), risk of fire Recommendations: Have a cleaning routine for the park, more skips/a collection service, establish a mini community safety forum with Gardaí, Cork City Council, and other stakeholders, promote Health, Climate and Environmental promotion, Rentokil every 5-6 weeks, clear/ clean Knock Youth Centre, use anti-mould spray, provide fire extinguishers, provide maintenance point of contact for community, 2nd exit in day rooms, meet regularly with residents.
