WELCOME to the 2024 Cork Lifelong Learning Festival
Dear friends, On any given day in Cork, the Atlantic light sweeps through its streets, laneways, parks and estates shining a sweeping light on life and society. Just like the idea of a sweeping and shining light the concept of lifelong learning also sweeps into life and society in Cork. The settings can be diverse. Sometimes it is pursued in formal educational settings and sometimes in a corner of a suburban hall. Experiences and ideas are exchanged, conversations and excitement flow and more often than not are interrupted by the pots of tea consumed, and then the conversations flow again. Indeed, the more one looks for the concept of lifelong learning in our city, the more visible it becomes. It bubbles metaphorically beneath the rich active community layer of our historic city. It is part of the sense of identity and sense of positive spirit the city possesses and consistently pursues. The annual lifelong festival brings many ideas and events together. In one week, one can pursue a taster of hundreds of lifelong learning events. At its heart this is a festival for everyone – a people’s festival, whose energy is forged from the ground up by communities and where ideas of togetherness, connection building and opportunity exploring are ever present. The festival is one that we all can be proud of. It is recognised and admired the world over and it has inspired many other cities to follow Cork’s trail blazing efforts. The strong Learning City ‘eco-system’ in Cork has led to international recognition by UNESCO, with Cork featuring again as a keynote in the 2023 International Conference on Learning Cities in Shanghai that celebrated 10 years of the Global Network of Learning Cities. This UNESCO recognition is built on achieving a Learning City Award in 2015, and on the city’s selection as hosts of the 3rd International Learning City Conference in 2017. On that note I wish to extend a warm welcome to representatives from many of these cities who will join us during festival week this year.
Cllr Kieran McCarthy
Árdmhéara Chorcaí Lord Mayor of Cork FESTIVAL PATRON
I wish to recognise and commend all of my fellow citizens who work to make the festival happen, by hosting events, encouraging participants to attend, by connecting with people, and inspiring them to discover the huge range of learning activities available all year-round in our city. As a lifelong learner with interests in history and heritage I am honored as Lord Mayor of Cork and Patron of the Festival, as a long-standing event host and as a participant in the festival I am very much looking forward to hosting, attending and supporting this year’s events.

Ar aon lá dá raibh i gCorcaigh, sileann solas na hAtlantach tríd a sráideanna, bealaí, páirceanna agus eastáit, ag lonrú solais ar shaol agus ar shochaí. Mar a bhíonn an smaoineamh ar sholas lonrach, sileann an smaoineamh ar fhoghlaim fada isteach sa saol agus sa tsochaí i gCorcaigh. Is féidir go mbeadh na socruithe éagsúla. Uaireanta, baintear úsáid as sa socruithe oideachais foirmeálta agus uaireanta i gcúinne halla tuaithe. Mínítear taithíochtaí agus smaointe, bíonn comhrá agus spleodar ag rith, agus go minic briseann na potaí tae a bhí díolta, ansin téann na comhráite ar aghaidh arís. Is cinnte, is mó a bhfuil duine ag faire ar an gconcúrsa foghlama fada inár gcathair, is mó a léirítear é. Scaipeann sé go meafarach faoin bhfochumann pobail gníomhach dúchasach atá againn inár gcathair stairiúil. Is cuid d'aiseolas agus d'fhealsúnacht dearfach atá ag cathair againn agus is é sin atá i ndiaidh a leanúint i gcoinne anuas. Cuireann an fhéile bhliantúil fada-ábhartha go leor smaointe agus imeachtaí le chéile. I rith seachtain amháin, is féidir le duine blas a fháil ar na céadta imeachtaí foghlama fadtéarmach. Ar a croílár, is féile í seo do chách - féile do phobal, a bhfuil a fuinneamh cruthaithe ón mbun suas ag pobal agus áit a bhfuil smaointe faoi chomhcheangal, faoi chruthú ceangail agus faoi léargas ar deiseanna i gcónaí i láthair. Is féile í a bhfuil árd-mholadh orainn uile di. Tá aitheantas tugtha di ar fud an domhain agus tá sí molta agus admhaithe go fóill ag go leor cathracha eile a leanann an ceannaireacht atá déanta ag Corcaigh. Cllr Kieran McCarthy hosting the Shandon Historical Walking Tour for the Cork Life Long Learning Festival 2023.
Cllr Kieran McCarthy giving a historical walking tour of Fitzgerald Park for the Cork Life Long Learning Festival. 2022 Tá an córas "eco" Foghlama Cathrach láidir i gCorcaigh tar éis aitheantais idirnáisiúnta a fháil ó UNESCO, le Corcaigh á n-ainmniú arís mar phríomhócáid ag Comhdháil Idirnáisiúnta na Cathrach Foghlama in Shanghai sa bhliain 2023 a cheiliúir deich mbliana den Ghreanadh Domhanda de Cathracha Foghlama. Tá an aitheantas UNESCO seo bunaithe ar bhronnadh Gradam Cathrach Foghlama in 2015, agus ar roghnú na cathrach mar óstach do 3ú Comhdháil Idirnáisiúnta na Cathrach Foghlama in 2017. Ar an nóta sin, ba mhaith liom fáilte chroíúil a chur roimh ionadaithe ó go leor dena cathracha sin a bheidh inár measc le linn seachtain na féile i mbliana. Ba mhaith liom aitheantas agus moladh a thabhairt do mo chomh-chónaithe go léir a oibríonn chun an fhéile a chur ar siúl, trí imeachtaí a óstáil, lucht féachana a spreagadh chun freastal, trí teagmháil a dhéanamh le daoine, agus iad a spreagadh chun réimse an-fhairsing de ghniomhaíochtaí foghlama a aimsiú atá ar fáil i rith na bliana inár gcathair. Mar fhoghlaimeoir fada-ábhartha le suim sa stair agus sa oidhreacht, tá an onóir orm mar Ard-Mhéara Chorcaí agus mar Phátrún na Féile, mar óstach imeachta fada-shealadach agus mar rannpháirtí sa fhéile táim ag tnúth go mór le hósta, freastal agus tacú le himeachtaí na bliana seo.

CORK LIFELONG LEARNING FESTIVAL WED 10TH - WED 17TH APRIL
Fèile Foghlama Chorcaì
A chairde, Fáilte romhaibh go léir chuig Féile Foghlama 2024. I am very pleased to welcome you this year’s Lifelong Learning Festival in Cork - a key event in the city’s learning calendar. Since 2004 Cork Education and Training Board is proud to be a lead partner in the Festival, which has been recognised internationally as a model of best practice. Over the years I have seen many great examples of how, by working together, the community, statutory and private sectors contribute so much to the experience of lifelong learning for people in Cork. During Festival week this year, you will find as always, many CETB learning centres, schools and campuses of the Cork College of Further Education and Training, hosting a wide variety of events, that showcase the many opportunities to engage with our programmes, tutors, trainers and learners. Cork ETB and all our partners in the Learning City - Cork City Council, MTU, UCC, NAPD and the HSE, are committed to improving access to Lifelong Learning, and we see the Lifelong Learning Festival as one of the key strategies to achieve this. The Festival is a strong demonstration of how Lifelong Learning builds the capacity of us all to adapt to the ever changing needs of society and the economy. I want to thank the organising committee, under the guidance of Chairperson Willie McAuliffe, and in particular the Festival co-ordinator Siubhán McCarthy, and all those voluntary, community, statutory and private sector partners who contribute to this ongoing success in so many ways. Denis Leamy Príomhfheidhmeannach / Chief Executive Bord Oideachais agus Oiliúna Chorcaí / Cork
Message from our Co-Chair On behalf of all our Cork Learning City partners, welcome to the 2024 Lifelong Learning Festival. Since the very first festival twenty years ago, it remains a celebration of all that is best about our city and the value that we place on education and lifelong learning. Our motto captures the essence of lifelong learning: Participate, Investigate and Celebrate learning in all its forms. The festival is a vitally important expression of our city as a Learning City. It is recognised locally as a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages, interests and abilities to develop new learning pathways, to explore new interests and form new connections with people throughout the city. It continues to be recognised all over the world as a model of best practice. I wish to extend my gratitude to our hard working voluntary festival committee and our festival co-ordinator, Siubhan McCarthy, for maintaining the standard of the festival since its inception. We hope your involvement in this year’s festival, whether as an event host, or as a participant (or both) is inspiring, and enjoyable. Thank you for making Cork Lifelong Festival a thriving expression of our personality and our values as a people, and most importantly, a celebration of our lifelong learning culture!
