Cork Heritage Week Brochure 2023

National Heritage Week, an initiative by the Heritage Council, celebrates all things heritage and is coordinated in Cork city by the Cork City Council Heritage Officer. It brings together communities, families, organisations, cultural institutions, academics, and enthusiasts, to build awareness about the value of heritage and support its conservation.

Welcome to National Heritage Week 2023

I am delighted to welcome you to this guide for events taking place during National Heritage Week 2023. It is exciting to see events taking place exploring the theme of Living Heritage which celebrate the traditions, skills and practices passed down through generations. I want to acknowledge the work of local authority Heritage Officers but also the large pool of dedicated volunteers from a variety of communities working in heritage who have created the events listed in this guide. Their efforts ensure not only that our heritage is preserved, but that new generations can explore and learn about our heritage. Remember, events will still be added up until the start of National Heritage Week on heritageweek.ie , so make sure to visit the website to view all events and online projects for your area. Cork Heritage Open Day Organised by Cork City Council, Cork Heritage Open Day sees over 40 historic and heritage buildings open their doors to the public for free for one day only. As part of Cork Heritage Open Day, a series of talks, exhibitions, historic walking tours and children’s events will take place. A talk by Anne Twomey of Shandon Area History Group exploring the life of Mary Elmes White, an Irish aid worker credited with saving the lives of at least 200 Jewish children at various times during the Holocaust, by hiding them in the boot of her car. 11am to 12pm, The City Library, Grand Parade.

Cork City Libraries The History of Hurling- Some Highlights

A talk by Dr. Pádraigín Riggs on the origins of the sliotar and the camán, the changing number of players on a team as well as the role of the ruling classes who were important patrons of the game. 11.30am to 12.30pm, Blackpool Library, Redforge Road.

Cork City Libraries Memoir Of An Irish Jew

A talk by Yvonne Cohen on her father’s book Memoir Of An Irish Jew: the story of Lionel Cohen who was born in 1922 into a Jewish family in Cork. Lionel served in the Irish Army, the British Merchant Navy, the Israeli Army and in the fledging Israeli Merchant Navy. 12pm to 12.45pm, The City Library, Grand Parade. Cork City Libraries RMS Leinster 1918

This event looks at the sinking of the RMS Leinster on October 10th, 1918 by a German Submarine. Regarded as Ireland’s greatest maritime disaster, Cork people aboard the vessel included a Honeymoon Couple, Mr and Mrs Louis Daly and WRNS Josephine Carr. 11am to 12pm, Blarney Library, The Square, Monacnapa, Blarney.

Cork City Libraries Starting your Family Tree

Cork LGBT Archive CLG Cork LGBT Archive Walking Tour

Orla Egan, Founder and CEO of Cork LGBT Archive CLG, will lead a walking tour through Cork City, visiting places of significance to the development of Cork’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Communities and telling stories about the queer history of Cork. 6pm to 7.30pm, The City Library, Grand Parade. Torah Scroll Inauguration After the Cork Jewish Synagogue closed in 2016, the Cork Jewish Community reorganised meeting mostly at people’s homes. Sadly the community did not own a Torah scroll which is the pillar of Jewish religious services. In March 2023, the Agudas Achim-Ezrath Israel synagogue in Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA, very generously donated one of their own Torah scrolls. The Cork Jewish Community warmly invites the public to join them in the festive inauguration of this Torah scroll, led by Rabbi David Kudan. RMS Lusitania and Story of Little Bettie: A poignant exhibition about the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915 and the story of Little Bettie who died on the Lusitania aged fifteen months and who is buried in the Ursuline Convent cemetery in Blackrock. Frederick Douglass and Ireland : An exhibition on the life and times of the American social reformer, abolitionist and statesman who visited Cork in 1845.
