CORK LEARNING CITY

perhaps try something new but, most off all, have fun during one of most engaging weeks of the year in our city!

Welcome to the 18th Cork Lifelong Learning Festival. Welcome all of you to the 2023 Cork Lifelong Learning Festival. I am honoured as Lord Mayor of Cork and Patron of the Festival to extend a hand of welcome to everyone who will participate in learning activities over festival week this year. As First Citizen of Cork I also want to acknowledge all those who work to make the festival happen, by hosting events and encouraging participants to attend, connecting people and inspiring them to discover the huge range of learning activities available year-round in our city. The festival has been central in creating a strong Learning City ‘eco-system’ in Cork, that has lead to

Fáilte romhat go léir chuig Féile Foghlama Lifelong Chorcaí 2023. Is mór an onóir dom mar Ardmhéara Chorcaí agus mar Phátrún na Féile lámh fáilte a chur roimh gach duine a ghlacfaidh páirt i ngníomhaíochtaí foghlama le linn sheachtain na féile i mbliana. Mar Chéad Saoránach Chorcaí ba mhaith liom aitheantas a thabhairt dóibh siúd go léir a oibríonn chun an fhéile a chur i gcrích, trí imeachtaí a óstáil agus rannpháirtithe a spreagadh le freastal orthu, daoine a nascadh agus iad a spreagadh chun an réimse ollmhór gníomhaíochtaí foghlama atá ar fáil ó cheann ceann na bliana inár gcathair. Bhí an fhéile lárnach i gcruthú ‘éiceachóras’ láidir Chathair Foghlama i gCorcaigh, rud a d’fhág aitheantas idirnáisiúnta ó UNESCO. Bhí mar Corcaigh cheann de na chéad chathracha ar dhomhan ar bronnadh Gradam Chathair Foghlama UNESCO orthu in 2015, agus in 2017 roghnaigh UNESCO an chathair mar óstach don 3ú Comhdháil Idirnáisiúnta um Chathair Foghlama.

international recognition by UNESCO. Cork was one of the first cities in the world to be presented with the UNESCO Learning City Award in 2015, and in 2017 the city was selected by UNESCO as hosts of the 3rd International Learning City Conference. The festival is recognised

Aithnítear agus tá meas ar an bhféile ar fud an domhain thall agus spreag sí go leor cathracha eile chun a gceiliúradh féin a eagrú. Ach is iad ár muintir féin a dhéanann an fhéile. Daoine cosúil le Phil Goodman i mo cheantar féin de thosaigh an fhéile i 2004. Is féile í seo do gach duine – féile daoine, agus féile ar féidir linn ar fad a bheith bródúil as. Ní stopann an fhoghlaim nuair a fhágann tú scoil nó an coláiste, leanann sé Dúbhghlas, a bhfuil a ngrúpa ‘Young at Heart’ páirteach ó ar aghaidh i rith ár saoil, agus bíonn sé ar siúl i ngach cineál suíomh, agus sin e a léiríonn clár na féile duit. Tá réimse ollmhór imeachtaí le roghnú astu, lena n-áirítear siúlóidí, taispeántais, ranganna, léirithe, agus go leor eile. Cibé áit as a dtagann tú, bíodh cónaí ort

and admired the world over and it has inspired many other cities to organise their own celebrations of

lifelong learning. But it is our own people that make the festival what it is. People like Phil Goodman in my area of Douglas, whose group Young at Heart has been involved since

the festival started in 2004. This is a festival for everyone – a people’s festival, and one that we can all be proud of. Learning doesn’t stop when you leave school or college, it continues throughout our lives, and takes place

in all sorts of settings, and that’s what the festival programme shows you. There’s a huge range of events to choose from, including walks, exhibitions, classes, performances, and a lot more. Wherever you come from, whether you have lived in Cork all your life or arrived here recently, you are welcome to attend as many of the events as you wish – and they are all free. I want to encourage everyone in Cork to live up to the festival motto – and to ‘Investigate, Participate and Celebrate’- in other words, find out what learning opportunities are available, take part yourself,

i gCorcaigh ar feadh do shaoil nó ar tháinig tú anseo le déanaí, tá fáilte romhat freastal ar an oiread de na himeachtaí is mian leat – agus tá siad ar fad saor in aisce. Ba mhaith liom gach duine i gCorcaigh a spreagadh chun mana na Féile a ghairm – agus ‘Imscrúdú, Páirt agus Ceiliúradh’ a dheanamh - i bhfocail eile, faigh amach cad iad na deiseanna foghlama atá ar fáil, páirt a ghlacadh ionat, b’fhéidir triail a bhaint as rud éigin nua ach, an chuid is tachtai, spraoi a bheith agat I gceann de na seachtainí is tarraingtí sa bhliain inár gcathair!

CORK LIFELONG LEARNING FESTIVAL MON 27TH MARCH - SUN 2ND APRIL

Fèile Foghlama Chorcaì

A chairde, Fáilte romhaibh go léir chuig Féile Foghlama 2023. I am very pleased to welcome you to this year’s Lifelong Learning Festival in Cork - a key event in the city’s learning calendar. Since 2004 Cork Education and Training Board is proud to be a lead partner in the Festival, which has been recognised internationally as a model of best practice. Over the years I have seen many great examples of how collaboration between the community, state and private sectors contribute to the experience of lifelong learning for people in Cork. This year the CETB Cork College of Further Education and Training, launched last year, will host on its various campuses a wide variety of events, building on the engagement of our programmes, tutors trainers and learners with the Festival over many years. The Lifelong Learning Festival is a unique event, one that has captured the imagination of people both in the city and beyond, and one that continues to evolve and develop in keeping with emerging learning needs. The Festival is a strong demonstration of how Lifelong Learning builds the capacity of us all to adapt to an ever changing society and economy. I want to thank the organising committee, in particular the chairperson Willie McAuliffe, the co-ordinator Siubhán McCarthy, and all those from the voluntary, community, state and private sectors who contribute to this ongoing success in so many ways. Denis Leamy Príomhfheidhmeannach / Chief Executive Bord Oideachais agus Oiliúna Chorcaí / Cork Education & Training Board

Message from our Co-Chair On behalf of all our Cork Learning City partners, welcome to our 2023 Lifelong Learning Festival. After such a successful return of the Festival last year, we are looking forward to this year being even bigger, better and brighter. It is an opportunity to celebrate all that is best about our city and the value that we place on education and lifelong learning. And it is an opportunity to encourage everyone to get involved in learning something new for the year ahead, to live up to our motto - to Investigate and Participate, as well as Celebrate. The festival is a vitally important expression of our city as a Learning City. It is a festival that is recognised globally, and more importantly locally, as a fantastic annual opportunity for people of all interests, ages and abilities to develop new learning pathways, to celebrate all that’s best in lifelong learning and to connect together. And to all ourt Festival Event Hosts and supporters, on behalf of all the partners I want to say a huge thank you to all for making the Director of service Cork City Council Community, Culture & Placemaking Co-Chair Cork Learning City and GLLiC Growing Lifelong Learning in Cork festival what it is! Garden Theatre, Presentation Secondary School Ballyphehane, Joe Murphy Road, T12 YH04 COMMUNITY Covid disrupted many of our community connections, and in the initial period prevented us participating in our regular activities like school, creche and community groups. We in Ballyphehane found some new and innovative ways to help all age groups to re-connect:online learning and homeschooling, zoom meetings, online chat cafes, WhatsApp messaging, Yoga and Walk, Talk and singing Groups are just some of the imaginative responses trialled locally to keep us all linked up during the challenges of lockdown. Making time to celebrate those connections and also take the opportunity to reconnect as a Learning Neighbourhood in a fun, inter-generational way! Community event with light refreshments..

“ We look forward to the festival each year as it

connects us all, old friends and new and re-energises our community as a learning space.”
